ALBANY, GA -- Calling all local non-profits: The Southwest Georgia Cancer Coalition is looking for organizations interested in applying for the 2011 Cancer Care Grants. The grants are designed to assists local non-profit, community-based health or advocacy organizations that assist local cancer patients who are undergoing treatment.

Grants up to $4,000 are awarded, and SWGA Cancer Coalition CEO Diane Fletcher says they hope the money goes to help cancer patients with items such as medications, physician prescribed nutritional support, medical equipment and supplies, and transportation to cancer-related medical visits.

"A patient may need pain medication that's not covered by their insurance or perhaps they dont' have insureance and moneys could cover that or gas money to travel to treatment," says Fletcher.

To be eligible for the grants, applicants must hold a 501c3 non-profit status, and patients and their families served by the grant funds must live within the Cancer Coalition’s 31-county service area.

Proposals from non-profits are due on Sept. 30.  You can find an application on the SWGA Cancer Coalition website.
