(AP) -- House Speaker David Ralston says he wants state lawmakers who owe late fees for failing to file campaign disclosure reports on time to be barred from serving on committees.

Ralston told The Associated Press on Thursday that he would propose a rule change during this summer's special session that would prohibit legislators from participating on committees until they'd cleared the tardy fees up. The rule change would not apply to fees under appeal. Ralston said he'd like to see legislation pass next year that would ban those lawmakers who owe fees from qualifying to run for office.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Sunday that nearly 50 Georgia lawmakers owe the state money after they filed their campaign finance reports late or didn't file the documents at all.
