ALBANY, GA -- The story you voted for as the Fox 31 News Facebook story of the day is 'Should overweight students be required to take physical education classes?'

People like to bring up the three "R’s" when it comes to education; reading writing and arithmetic. But sometimes a fourth ‘R’ gets overlooked… running.

“It's statistically shown that kids that eat healthier and exercise, when you combine that with academics, they do much better in school. They are not as sick,” said Pamela Jackson the founder of Youth Becoming Healthy, a school based initiative designed get more students up and moving. “One in three children in Georgia are overweight for overweight adults, but they rank number two in the country for overweight children.”

She is not alone in her concerns.

“Motor skill development is enhances a child's learning skills inside the class room as well as their social skills also,” said Michael Moore, a P.E. teacher at International Studies Elementary School.

They say it becomes more important during the high school years, but often kids only have to take one or two years of physical education to meet minimum requirements.

“It's very important that kids get at lease vigorous exercise for at least 15 to 30 minutes each and every day,” said Moore. “Physical education should be required even more in the high school years because that's when they begin to put on what we call the creeping obesity.”

“If they don't get it at school, a lot of times they don't get it at home. Many of them are latchkey kids and so that's a component of creating a healthy child a whole child,” said Jackson.

It's clear that the experts are on the side of more physical education. But it's the kids that have to do it. So what do they think about the issue.

”I love going to P.E. and then going to math class, because i am not as sleepy and tired and stuff,” said Joi Jackson.

“I don't think you should have to take it all four years, but at least two during your high school career,” said Robert Golden

“In today's society many students have a problem with obesity and it teaches you what ways to be healthy,” said Shawntasia Crawford

“If you know how to be active and how to treat different injuries you'll have a longer healthier life,” said Jordan Cox.
