TIFTON, GA -- Updated Thursday, March 3 at 10:30 p.m.

Jefferey Hughes, 48, was hit by a train early Wednesday afternoon.

Officers say Hughes was standing on the tracks by Doc Melton Sr. Drive and Southern Avenue when he stepped in front of the train. They say he was then airlifted to The Medical Center of Central Georgia.

He was in stable condition as of Wednesday night.

The train was carrying large pieces of machinery.

Police say a man was hit by a train in Tifton early Wednesday afternoon.

Officers say the the man was walking on the tracks at Doc Melton Sr. Drive and Southern Avenue when he was hit around 1:30 p.m. He was taken to a hospital with serious injuries. His age and name have not been released to the media.
