WARNER ROBINS, GA. (AP) -- A Warner Robins city councilman has been charged in a case that began when he reported his cell phone had been stolen.

Warner Robins police said Wednesday that councilman John Williams is charged with tampering with evidence, making a false statement, false report of a crime and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

Police say Williams turned himself in and was released on his own recognizance.

Williams called authorities Sunday to report the theft. Officials say inconsistencies were discovered during the police investigation.

Williams says he was subjected to verbal abuse and accusations after the phone was found, and that he was being retaliated against for reasons that include his stance on a proposed law enforcement center.
