21-year-old Eric Smith says he was traveling northbound on U.S. 19 from Camilla when he went to make a left turn at a caution light in Baconton and was struck by an oncoming truck.

Smith says his car spun around twice, while the truck flipped into the air and landed upside down.  The driver of the truck, 56-year-old Henry Lee Johnson Jr., was taken to the Mitchell County Hospital.  He suffered no life threatening injuries.  Baconton Deputy Fire Chief David Forrester says the location of the wreck didn’t surprise him.

“It’s a very dangerous intersection. We have a lot of wrecks here like this one, a lot of times we have serious injuries, we’ve actually had some fatalities here in this intersection.  It’s a real concern to us because we have a school just two blocks over here and most all of the kids and parents and teachers that go to that school cross that intersection twice a day.  As you can tell the traffic out here on 19 is very heavy and this is a very dangerous intersection and it’s a real concern for us,” said Forrester.
