Authorities issue warning about holiday scams

Captain Craig Dodd of the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Department says that his office has received complaints from residents that they have received counterfeit checks in the mail. 

The checks come with letters instructing the recipient to send a sum in the $3,000 range to a foreign address in order to receive money from a lottery or inheritance.  This scam, known as Nigerian Lotto, is a threat to unsuspecting seniors living on fixed incomes.  Beverly Kimbrough, of the SOWEGA Council on Aging, counsels the seniors that come into her office “if you get any mail asking you to sign your name or send money, don’t do it.”
