ALBANY, GA -- The Westover Patriots set a new standard winning their program's first home playoff game last Friday. For their efforts, the Patriots received a gift in the form of a second round home playoff game.

Westover will host the region three, four seed South Effingham at Hugh Mills Stadium after the Mustangs defeated Westside Macon in their GHSA state playoff opener.

The Patriots, with limited postseason experience, have a new challenge ahead. Westover must handle being the favorite in a playoff game. South Effingham is the true underdog lacking in size and speed compared to the Albany school. That’s not what Westover Head Coach Octavia Jones is preaching to his team.

“I basically told them that their playoff history is almost identical to ours. They won their first playoff game in the history of their football program last week, so they're hungry and they want more- just like we do,” Coach Jones said.

Westover will have to control North Carolina state commit and 1,400 yard rusher, Josh Mercer. Mercer scored three touchdowns in South Effingham’s 43-33 win over Westside Macon.

Another thing Westover will have to control is the flu bug. Patriots coaches and quarterback T.J. Cromer have been battling a cold this week in practice.
