A Lee County citizen went to help a man lying on the road when the man jumped up with a gun
LEE COUNTY, GA -- Jim Phillips says he and his daughter were driving on Oakland Road around midnight Wednesday night when he saw a man lying in the road and a truck on the side with someone appearing to be on the phone calling for help.
As soon as Phillips opened his truck door, something strange happened.
“The gentleman that was lying on the ground jumped up with a handgun and started toward me. I didn't even finish getting out of the truck. In the meantime the gentleman who was sitting in the passenger side had run around to the other side of my vehicle and was pulling on the door trying to get in,” says Phillips.
Phillips did manage to drive away, but the Lee County Sheriff’s Office says if it happens again, they are worried people will not be as lucky if they’re not warned.
Lee County Sheriff Reggie Rachals says they believe this was an armed robbery attempt and are still looking for the suspects, two white males between the ages of 30 and 40. They say the suspects were driving in a light grey Ford F150 or F250.
Rachals says it’s disappointing that people wanting to be Good Samaritans have to beware of scams like this.
“If you feel like this is happening, back up, get out of the way, or do what you have to do to get out of the way and survive yourself and whoever may be with you,” says Rachals.
If you have any information on the suspects the Lee County Sheriff’s Office is looking for, call them at (229) 759-6034.
