ALBANY, GA -- The Exchange Club of Albany continued a 50+ year tradition on Friday by naming an officer of the year from each of the surrounding local law enforcement agencies.

Representatives from the Albany Police Department, Dougherty County Police Department, Dougherty County Sheriff's Office, Lee County Sheriff's Office, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Georgia State Patrol came to present the awards to their top officers.

GSP Trooper First Class 2 Christopher Jewell was recognized for leading his post with 74 Driving Under the Influence arrests in 2012.

Jewell says after working in Metro Atlanta and seeing the horrific crashes as a result of drinking and driving, he made it a personal goal to get those drivers off the road.

Also recognized was Lee County Sheriff's Office Deputy Tim Holman, who only two years ago was working as a pipe fitter.

Holman says after being laid off, he decided to take his life in a different direction doing what he wanted to do.

Nicknamed "Bulldog" for his tenacity, Holman says he'll chase down a lead and won't give up until he's finished with his duties.

Exchange Club President Skip Nichols says participating in this ceremony every year gives members the chance to see what really goes into being an officer.

Nichols says we often don't realize all of what an officer goes through and it's always an eye opener to hear these stories.

Each of the officers honored was given a check and a plaque for their recognition and say they're honored to be rewarded for just doing the right thing.
