CORDELE --
Officials with the Georgia Office of Insurance and Fire Safety say 38-year-old Tyrone Newsome sustained burns to over 60% of his body during an early Tuesday morning fire at his home on Rainbow Drive in Cordele.

Firemen responded within minutes and were able to contain the fire to the main bedroom where they found Newsome unconscious on the floor. The rest of his family was able to get out safely and the house sustained minimal damage.

Officials say Newsome was trying to put out the fire when he was overcome by the smoke. He was airlifted to the Augusta Burn Center and his current condition is unknown.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
