ALBANY, GA --
The SOWEGA Council on Aging and the Southwest Georgia CARE-NET held a Lunch & Learn Seminar on Thursday in honor of National Caregiver Month.

Family Caregiver Program Coordinator Ada Brown says they hold this event as a way to thank those that devote their lives to taking care of others and let them know they're not in this role alone.

The event featured live music and speeches from professionals in the caregiving field who talked about the importance of taking care of yourself. Brown says often caregivers cancel their own doctor appointment to do something for someone else but they have to keep up their health or they won't be able to take care of others.

The seminar ended with the naming of the Caregiver of the Year and Paraprofessional Caregiver of the Year.

Margie Parker, a retired professional caregiver, was named the Caregiver of the Year for her efforts taking care of her mother and husband.

The Paraprofessional Caregiver of the Year award was given to Karin Miller of the Advocacy Resource Center who has taken care of a non-speaking client for 7 years.
