A Minnesota-based men’s chorus acclaimed as “the premier men’s vocal ensemble in the United States" by Fanfare magazine will perform at Albany State University.

The group, Cantus known worldwide for its trademark warmth and blend of music ranging from the Renaissance to the 21st century is featured during the T. Marshall Jones Fine Arts and Lyceum Series at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 8 at the Albany Municipal Auditorium, located at 200 North Jackson St. A master class for vocal students and ensembles from Albany State and area high schools will be held Friday, October 9 at noon in the ACAD Auditorium located on the campus.

The Washington Post hailed the ensemble’s sound as having both “exalting finesse” and “expressive power”.

“The crystal clear singing of Cantus comes as close to sheer perfection on all levels, as does any such group I’ve ever heard.  And obviously critics agree, Cantus having been hailed one of the finest men’s a capellaensembles in the world,” said Dr. Leroy Bynum, dean of the ASU College of Arts and Humanities.

As one of the country’s only two full-time vocal ensembles, Cantus has grown to prominence with its distinctive approach to creating music. Working without a conductor, members of Cantus rehearse and perform as chamber musicians, each contributing to the entirety of the artistic process.

Songs from their latest album, “On the Shoulders of Giants” will be showcased during the ASU performance. The newest release from the ensemble celebrates the influence and inspiration of composers who have made an indelible mark in music with works that are both timeless and instantly recognizable. The album’s repertoire spans nearly a thousand years and includes early works of vocal melody to the rock sound of U2’s “MLK” and works by Sibelius, Mendelssohn, Schubert and Randall Thompson.

“We’re tremendously excited about the group’s upcoming concert and master-class, certainly because of what I anticipate will be a life changing experience for some, but also because the two events represent the fact that ASU continues to deliver on its commitment to be Southwest Georgia's leader in arts education and programs of exceptional quality,” Bynum added.

Tickets for $15, $10 and $5 are available at the Civic Center Box Office and on the evening of the performance at the Municipal Auditorium Box Office.

For more information about the performance or tickets, telephone the ASU Department of Fine Arts Department at 229-430-4849.
