ALBANY, GA -- Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek addressed the county's Public Safety committee on his department's budget.

Cheek says they need to get way from the idea of "generating revenue" and instead focus on areas where there can be reduction.

There was also talk earlier in the year during budget talks of consolidating the county police with the sheriff's office. Cheek addressed differences in the two departments.

The Dougherty County Public Safety committee will recommend to the Dougherty County Commission that they lay to rest any efforts to consolidate the Dougherty County Police Department and the Sheriff's Office.

They will also recommend that they take no further action to find a replacement for Chief Don Cheek for six months in order to save costs, leaving Cynthia Battle as interim chief for that time. After six months, they will look at interim Chief Battle's accomplishments for consideration for police chief.
