ALBANY, GA --
Dougherty County Police Chief Don Cheek has announced his retirement due to medical reasons.

In an interview with FOX 31, he has disclosed that he has been diagnosed with leukemia.

Cheek has been with the Dougherty County Police for over 9 years with next week being his 41st year in law enforcement service.

He has worked for numerous local agencies and institutions including the Albany Police Department, the District Attorney's Office, and even as a professor at Darton College.

Cheek said he plans to stay involved with the community and to volunteer with groups such as the Patriot Guard Riders and American Legion. He added that most of all, he plans to slow down and spend time with his wife and family.

The Dougherty County Commission, Dougherty County Police staff and employees have been notified of Cheek's retirement. His last day will be November 9th.

Cheek's replacement will be determined by the Dougherty County Commission at a future date.
