ALBANY, GA. -- Albany commissioners are bringing information about the upcoming Transportation Special Local Option Sales Tax referendum into the community.
State Representative Winfred Dukes and Dougherty County Commissioner Gloria Gaines held a community forum Monday evening at Rhema Word Cathedral on Oglethorpe Blvd.
Representatives from the Southwest Georgia Regional Commission educated people on the facts surrounding seven Dougherty County projects that would benefit from the TSPLOST vote.
Those projects include the Clark Avenue extension and the Westover extension.
Officials say 75% of the money raised from the one cent sales tax will go towards these projects over the next ten years.
“Voters need to understand those projects. They need to evaluate those projects and determine whether or not they should go in their pockets for an additional penny. That will be placed on groceries and everything else you buy here,” says Gloria Gaines, Dougherty County Commissioner.
The sales tax is expected to bring thousands of jobs to southwest Georgia, bringing a boost to the economy.
Another community forum will be held on July 12th at the Greater Mount Olive Baptist Church at 6:30 p.m.
