ALBANY, GA --
Few Americans know the detailed process on retiring an American flag. With Thursday being flag day, FOX 31 took an in-depth look at how to properly retire the red, white and blue.

Retiring an American flag can come in two different ways. The owner can choose to burn the flag, or bury it. However, it is considered dishonorable to throw away a flag or continue to leave it frayed, tattered,  or faded.

"The proper way of disposing of an American flag, is by burning or burying it. And if anybody needs a flag that needs to be retired, they can bring it by the American legion on Gillonville Road, and we'll take care of it for them," said retired military man Marvin Mixon.

And that goes for any American Legion post, they are happy to help the community retire flags through the proper specifications and steps.
