ALBANY --
You've heard it all when it comes to cops and doughnut shops, but this weekend it was no joke when law enforcement officers from all over Dougherty County stationed themselves outside the Krispy Kreme for three days.
"It is fantastic. It's a great way to raise money for Special Olympics Georgia," said Recreation and Parks employee, Kristin Caso.
The officers were participating in "Cops on Doughnut Shops,” a state-wide event with one goal in mind: to raise enough money so every registered athlete can make their entrance fee for the games.
"We couldn't do it without the good people of Albany and southwest Georgia," said Billy Griner Jr.
Griner, a multi-time medalist at the olympics, wore the medals proudly as he waves people into the parking lot to donate to the waiting officers hoping to raise fifteen-thousand-dollars over the three days.
The event was about more than raising money, however. It’s a way to get involved in the community and let the Special Olympics athletes know we're cheering them on.
“It's important to be involved in this. They're less fortunate than we are and we're in a position to help them and we always look for ways to do that,” said Colonel John Ostrander of the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office.
Caso also felt the importance of being there for the athletes.
"When you see how important it is to them, it is just so much fun to come out here and help them raise money so that they can go to these fantastic special events."
The goal was reached even before the final count, which will be made sometime this week.
If you didn't get a chance to make a donation while satisfying your sweet tooth, you can drop off cash or a check made out to Special Olympics Georgia to the Dougherty County Sheriff's Office.
100% of the proceeds go to the cause.
