ALBANY, GA --
In our Facebook story of the day, you wanted know the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Type 1, formerly called juvenile onset diabetes, occurs because the pancreas isn’t getting enough insulin that’s why people with this type need insulin, either injected or through an insulin pump.

Type 2  diabetes is when you have enough insulin in your body but it just doesn’t work well.  This type of diabetes accounts for approximately 85 to 90 percent of all the diabetics in the country.

“One main difference is that someone that has type 1 diabetes has to have insulin for survival; end of discussion. They cannot live without insulin. Someone with type 2 diabetes can survive without insulin. They can be diet controlled diet and oral pill controlled or diet and insulin controlled,” says dietitian Julie Joiner of the Diabetes Care Center.

The simplest way to find out if you’re at risk for diabetes is to get your blood sugar checked by your doctor. a healthy blood sugar is between 80 to 120.
