ALBANY, GA -- Visitors’ at the Civil Rights Institute of Albany received a musical treat from the Freedom Singers Saturday afternoon.

The Freedom Singers formed in 1960’s in Albany. The group traveled throughout the country to marches, churches, and jails to raise funds for the Students Nonviolent Coordination Committee (SNCC) to improve civil rights for African Americans.

Group member Rutha Mae Harris says music played a vital role.

"Being an original Freedom Singer, all the songs stick out with me because if there haven’t been the freedom songs I don’t think there would have been a movement," said Thema Harris.

If you would like to see the Freedom Singers perform, you can catch them at the Albany Civil Rights Institute on the second Saturday of every month.
