ALBANY, GA. -- A new study released by the journal of Pediatrics is bringing the severity of child abuse to the light.

According to the report nearly 4,600 children in the U.S. were hospitalized with broken bones and other injuries because of child abuse.

This information was gathered from the 2006 Kids' Inpatient Database.

The most common victims are babies under the age of one, with 58 cases per 100,000 infants.

In 2011 the Albany Police Department handled 45 cases of child cruelty, which is a 34 percent drop from 78 cases in 2010.

Local officials say southwest Georgia has some of the best teams within the state working on child abuse cases.

“Each county has their own protocol as to what each official is going to tackle and how they're going to jointly investigate those cases, so that no child slips through the cracks,” said Lily Pad Sane Center Regional Child Advocacy Director Amy Boney.

She says many local organizations also work together when reviewing cases.
