ALBANY, GA -- Quail Unlimited is known for more than their annual Quail Hunt; they're also recognized for their work in quail conservation.

Dave Howell with Quail Unlimited, also a wildlife biologist, says it costs a lot of money to help with Bob White Quail conservation, but habitat work done on privately owned plantations helps keep the population high.

"On the plantations where they have perfected some of the techniques the right type of disturbance, there's a lot of prescribed burning, they thin pines, they do strip disking, they just do a variety of different things that they've learned are beneficial for quail population and that has really helped the birds," says Howell.

Howell says 70 to 80 percent of Bob Whites die every year but they raise a large number of young, which is why there are particular hunting seasons, like in the fall, for quails.
