ALBANY, GA. -- Wednesday marked the 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.

The attack by the Japanese brought the United States into World War II.

On that day nine U.S. Navy ships were sunk and more than 2,000 service men and civilians died.

A lieutenant commander who worked at Pearl Harbor in the 1960's says 70 years ago America showed the world that they were not going to be the underdogs.

“Because of the courage of American citizens, young people who might not even be out of high school stepped forward to fight for the freedoms that the world so loves and that we are so known for,” said Ret. U.S. Navy Lieutenant Commander Allen Pendleton.

Pendleton says he's filled with pride knowing what was sacrificed by our servicemen on that day.
