AMERICUS, GA -- Built in 1892 the Windsor Hotel has remained a historical landmark for downtown Americus.
"Americus was the seventh largest city in the state of georgia, americus was a hustling bustling town, cotton and railroad and therefore they chose to do the windsor here," said Sharad Patel, owner of the Windsor Hotel.
The hotel was named after John Windsor, a prominent local businessman. More than 200 years later it’s now owned by Sharad Patel and part of the Best Western hotel family.
"Best Western in the only brand that will allow me to keep the name which we wanted to keep the Windsor Hotel so now it is named the Best Western Plus Windsor Hotel," said Patel.
Patel also wanted to keep the history. Originally 100 rooms decorated with Victorian and Moorish styles—today 53 rooms have been renovated keeping with the theme but adding current amenities.
"Everything you see at the hotel is historically correct, all of our fabrics, wall coverings furnature is either antique or reproduction," said Patel.
Each room here at the Windsor is different and they've had some notable guests, Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, FDR before he was president, even mobster Al Capone is rumored to have stayed at the Windsor.
"This is not a cookie cutter hotel where you seen one, you've seen them all you have to actually stay in each room to experience the Windsor," said Patel.
