ALBANY, GA -- In our Facebook Story of the Day, viewers voted to learn more about safeguarding their home while they are on vacation.

Law enforcement recommends having an active alarm system and having good outdoor lighting.

Capt. Craig Dodd with the Dougherty County Sheriff’s Office also says people should time their lights to come on in the evening and turn off a few hours later when lights would normally go off in the house. He says do not keep the lights on all day and night because it is a sign to burglars that no one is home.

According to Dodd, the best thing is to know your neighbors and get a trustworthy one to keep an eye out on your house.

"Most people nowadays don't care to learn to know their neighbors, and it's sad because back in the old days when everybody knew everybody in the neighborhood, you had a lot less trouble, you had a lot less burglaries, a lot less thefts, because why? Everybody looked out for each other," says Dodd.

He also says to either stop your mail and newspaper delivery or have that trustworthy neighbor pick them up for you. Dodd says if your mail and newspapers start to pile up, it is another sign to burglars that no one is home.
