TIFTON, GA -- After Tifton residents contacted FOX 31 in regards to a Salmonella outbreak in Tifton, reporters went out to get answers.

According to Courtney Sheeley with the South Health District, there is not an outbreak in Tifton. There have been, however, ten cases of Salmonella in the last two months, but the cases are not linked.

"It's one of our common illnesses in Southwest Georgia, and this time of year is a prime time for Salmonella cases, late summer going into early fall," says Jacqueline Jenkins, Southwest Health District Epidemiologist. She says kids are back in schools or daycares, and the bacteria could be spreading there.

"We see it more so in institutions. We've had similar outbreaks like Tifton in daycare centers because of the fecal-oral route and changing of diapers with kids," says Jenkins.

To prevent Salmonella, health officials say to wash hands thoroughly after handling raw food or coming in contact with reptiles, birds or pet feces. They also stress the importance of properly cooking foods, such as eggs, meat and poultry.

Symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, which can occur between 12 to 72 hours after the infection. The illness can last up to seven days, but is treatable. People with severe symptoms should be hospitalized, according to health officials.
