ALBANY, GA -- The Maintenance Center at Albany Marine Corps Logistic Command is reducing its workforce by 360 contractors within the next 15 months.  LogCom officials say the reductions will begin on Oct.1 – the beginning of their new fiscal year – and continue phasing out through the following 12 months.

“It's never an easy thing to do because, even in this case, contract employees are a huge part of our workforce and any reduction is very unpleasant and unnecessary,” says Col. Stephen Medeiros. “In the end, we're like any business; we've got to make decisions based on, in this case, Marine Corps operational requirements.”

The reason for the reduction in workforce is because of a reduction in workload. Given that the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are coming to a close and troops are being withdrawn, there is less of a need for vehicle repairs or new vehicles.

“The Marine Corps operational requirements dictate how we meet those needs so as those requirements are lessening, there's also a lessening of workload reduction,” says Medeiros.

Regardless of the changes, the Maintenance Center says there is one thing that isn’t.

“The mission of this facility and this workforce is absolutely imperative to support Marine Corps requirements and direct support to the war fighter. That will always continue,” says Medeiros.

Albany Marine Corps LogCom officials say there will eventually be a consolidation of the Albany, Georgia, and Barstow, California, Logistics Commands, which may cause more reductions, but whether or not there will be has not been determined yet.
