The Mitchell and Baker County Sheriff’s Offices team up to raise money
The Mitchell County and Baker County Sheriff’s Offices partnered together to have fun and raise money in the second annual Flint River Poker Float and Raft Race.
Dozens of people took the 22-mile float down the Flint River and in the afternoon handmade water rafts were raced a short distance.
Mitchell County Sheriff W. E. Bozeman say all of the money raised will go toward the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes Association. “Some of these kids are orphans and we help them out by financing their way through school. Everything. It’s their home and we furnish them everything they need and all the education they will do including college” says Bozeman.
Neil Hagar, a member of the Georgia Sheriff’s Association says both Baker County and Mitchell County have children in need of care. “We’re like any other community. We have boys and girls where someone needs to care about them and give them a chance. Our sheriff’s are really good at that. They care and take them to youth homes depending on where an opening is. They make sure that boys and girls have an opportunity” says Hagar.
In the raft race, AMF Farms won the speed category, and the Mitchell County Sheriff’s Department won the title of having the most creative raft.
Officials say they plan on hosting the event again next year.
