Updated with video; Nurses treat minor injuries, illnesses

ALBANY, GA -- Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital has provided nurses to local summer camps this year free of charge.

The 14 Registered Nurses and four Certified Nursing Assistants are on hand at a variety of camps, including Girl Scout camps, HealthWorks Camp, and Camp Good Grief.

The C.H.A.M.P.S., or Choosing Healthy Activities and Methods Promoting Safety Camp, at Southside Middle School on Newton Road has some of the nurses.

"We love our job, and we love that we're able to do this," said Terri Dabbs, a nurse who is assigned to the camp. "It's been an experience this year, but it's worked out, it really has." Dabbs said students play football, kickball and learn life skills at the two-month program which is run by the Dougherty County Sheriff's Department.

"It's amazing how many kids would not be able to attend camp if we didn't have nurses to monitor those health conditions," said Sandra Breedlove, a Registered Nurse at the camp and team leader at Phoebe Network of Trust. "We do see kids with minor injuries, thank goodness. But the nurses are here to provide that first aid."

Breedlove said she and other nurses treat about 15 children per day for minor injuries as well as asthma and common colds. The camp has 190 children ages six to 14 enrolled.
