Memorial Day is a holiday honoring soldiers and veterans, but for some it's a chance to spend extra time with family
ALBANY, GA -- While Memorial Day is typically a day for veterans and soldiers, it has become a popular day to spend with family.
It is a day typically filled with barbecues and pool-goers; it’s the holiday some see as the unofficial start of summer. On Memorial Day, Cox Landing was filled to the brim with cars and families taking their boats out.
"I think that all the holidays start off as one thing and then it always winds up having to do with the families. Family has always been involved with everything it seems like with the holidays," says one Cox Landing visitor.
Memorial Day began as a response to the Civil War to honor dead Union soldiers and was originally called Decoration Day.
