While friends and family toured the new Wal-Mart location, employees distributed donations to local community organizations
ALBANY, GA -- Friends and family of employees at the new East Albany Wal-Mart were invited for a preview of the new store.
The new store brings 250 new jobs to the area, and the store’s manager says two supervisors have already been promoted.
During the preview event, $7,000 worth of grants were distributed to local organizations, including the Albany Police Department which received $1,500.
“This is the community that we serve and the only way we can give back to them is to try to produce grants and things to that nature,” says Store Manager Andy Carter.
APD says they will use the money for community programs such as their Community Awareness Day.
“Our family protection unit is actually putting on these events to get familiar with the community so when they see that friendly face they won't be afraid to tell the police about what has happened to them,” says APD Media Manager Phyllis Banks.
Lily Pad received $1,000, the Dougherty County Police Department received $1,000 to help buy school supplies for kids, the Albany Fire Department received $1,000 for burn victims of Georgia, Mt. Zion Community Reinvestment Corp. received $2,000 for their free clinic, Second Harvest of South Georgia received $1,000 and Carter says the East Albany Wal-Mart employees raised $1,600 for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
The new Wal-Mart location on Cordele Road will open to customers on Wednesday at 8 a.m. Carter says to allot for the amount of traffic they will receive at the East Albany location, Wal-Mart has done research to make sure there are enough traffic lights and turn lanes.
