Officials say President Obama needs to fix domestic affairs as well
ALBANY, GA -- How will the death of Osama Bin Laden affect the 2012 elections?
Political science professor, Roger Marietta says the death of Osama Bin Laden will affect the upcoming elections in two ways.
“First of all, I think it's a big foreign policy win for President Obama and everybody recognizes that. Secondly I think it's going to help generally the people's attitude, the morale of the country,” said Marietta.
And while Marietta says that this will no doubt improve Obama’s approval ratings, the president should also focus on other factors for re-election such as the economy.
State Representative Ed Rynders agrees.
“Obama came into office with supposed strength in domestic areas, with weakness in foreign affairs. This may help him in foreign affairs, but ultimately people may judge him on domestic like healthcare and the economy,” said Rynders.
Marietta says morale should be going up, saying that an end to the war is in sight.
“And we're planning to pull troops out of Afghanistan starting in July, so I think that's a good thing.”
However, Rynders believes now is the time to be on guard.
“The other thing we've got to watch in this is what happens with Al Qaeda right now. Are they going to plan retribution against the United States, because as much as this president is benefiting, you could see a turn in it if we get attacks on the U.S.,” said Rynders.
Marietta also believes that with the boost in morale, it could roll over into the economy side of things--people feel better, therefore, spend more money. But it's something only time will tell.
