According to the Georgia Supreme Court Lee County lawyer Craig Mathis has been disbarred.
According to the public order, the State Bar of Georgia was seeking disbarment based on the handling of funds received in a settlement of his client’s lawsuit. The court states the client hired Mathis to represent her in a personal injury case which eventually settled for $60,000. Justices state, Mathis received the funds but failed to pay $29,785 in outstanding medical expenses and kept the money for personal use.
Mathis had been ordered to appear before a review panel in March after admitting that he violated state bar rules when he failed to represent the interests of a client involved in a 2007 child custody dispute. Mathis missed that hearing after GBI and Lee County investigators arrested him in March 2010 on related charges.
