Community Development Block Grants could be on chopping block

ALBANY, GA. -- The recent talk of budget cuts and a possible government shutdown have some local officials concerned about the future of Albany’s most needy families.

A community forum was held today at the United Way to discuss potential cuts to the Community Development block Grant program.

Speakers from several of the area’s non-profit organizations and student volunteers told the group that cutting funding to the poor will only lead to more problems down the road.

"Just imagine if the children are out on the street and they’re getting in a lot of trouble," said ASU student and volunteer Whitley Key. "They’ll be spending more federal money building more prisons."

The group plans to send petitions asking for fewer cuts to the state and federal government.
