17-year-old Maruice Lewis had been scheduled to go to trial in November but the case was delayed after he fired his state-appointed public defender
MOULTRIE, GA -- A high-profile murder trial is scheduled to begin in Moultrie on Monday.
17-year-old Maruice Lewis is charged with felony murder in the January 2010 shooting death of Juan David Gizon-Lopez.
Court records show that Lewis had been scheduled to go to trial in November of last year but the case was delayed after he fired his state-appointed public defender. Two co-defendants in the case, 20-year-old Antwaun Demetrius Key and 19-year-old Tamorious Collins, pleaded guilty in November.
Key was the alleged triggerman in the fatal shooting of Gizon-Lopez. Following his guilty plea to manslaughter, Key was sentenced to 20 years in prison and given an additional five years for possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.
The judge sentenced Collins to eight years in prison after he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter. Collins also received seven years probation and was ordered to pay a $2,000 fine.
