Is the new 31-ounce Starbucks drink too much?
The new 31-ounce Trenta is 2.5 times bigger than a small 12-ounce Starbucks beverage
ALBANY, GA -- Starbucks directors say customers asked for it and they got it.
Beginning Tuesday, Georgia was one of 14 states to begin serving the Starbucks Trenta. The 31-ounce iced coffees, teas and lemonades are now available in the Peach State, including Southwest Georgia.
Starbucks director Joe Del Savio says customers submitted ideas on Starbuck’s website asking for a larger drink size. The Trenta is a result of that feedback.
Terrie Alby with Healthy Fit says a problem with the Trenta is the size: She says people already consume most of their calories through beverages. Alby says add in syrups and milks used in the beverages and there are even more calories and fat people are consuming that they don’t need. She says the new 31-ounce drink will add even more to people’s calorie intake.
But Starbucks directors say the company kept calorie count in mind when creating the new size.
“It’s not about high calories,” says Del Savio.
Del Savio says as a part of the company’s health and wellness platform, Starbucks limited Trenta-sized beverages to iced drinks that were low in calories. Starbucks officials say in the new 31-ounce drinks will have fewer than 230 calories.
But like everything else we eat, Alby say it’s all about moderation.
The Trenta is seven ounces larger than the Venti cup and costs an extra 50 cents.
Del Savio says after doing tests before Trenta’s release, the company found that blended drinks like Frappuccinos did not sit well in the cups, so only iced beverages are available in the 31-ounce size.
Other company directors say they expect the Trenta to do well in the summer when customers can purchase large, cool beverages during hot, summer days.
Company directors say if all goes well, Starbucks nationwide will see the Trenta by May 3rd.
