The Dougherty County Public Health Department says in 2010 they saw positive flu cases double and gave 2,000 less vaccines

DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- The Dougherty County Public Health Department says they’re seeing an increase in flu cases and a decrease in people receiving the vaccine.

Health Department officials say they can only speculate why they haven’t given as many vaccinations this year as last year. They say it could have been higher in 2009 because of the H1N1 pandemic.

Public Health officials say just before the holiday season, they gave 2,000 less flu vaccines and saw twice as many positive flu cases.

“There are so many places that you can get a flu shot from, and we can only look at our own numbers. Our own numbers are down. We are down in our flu vaccination administration,” says Southwest Health District Health Director Dr. Jacqueline Grant.

They say it is not too late to get a flu shot. The peak months for the flu are February, March and sometimes April.

Public Health officials say they encourage community members to continue washing their hands to help fight flu viruses.
