Judges say this year's competition had a heavy theme but students captured the concept well
DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- “Remembering, celebrating, economically responsible, it’s a day on not a day off” – That was the theme Dougherty County middle school and high school students captured in their artwork for Martin Luther King Celebration 2011.
Judges say they were overwhelmed at how well the young artists captured this heavy concept.
“I was just blown away by some of the things I saw that students were able to do because here are students who are in middle school and high school, like the seventh graders really showed well. We were looking at the work and we were like, ‘Wow!’” says Judge and Junior Art Major at Albany State University Karena Anderson.
Junior at Westover High School Phyl Fralick won the “Got It” award for capturing the essence of the theme best in his work, “Home Sweet Home.” While his picture of an old woman with a house in the background may not have on first glance captured the competition’s theme, judges say his description completed the circle: The artwork was of Fralick’s 92-year-old grandmother who lived through the depression and managed to become a homeowner.
Briauna Anglin won from Westover won the high school Best of Show with her piece, “Life.” Michael Grate from Albany Middle School won the middle school Best of Show with “Raise Your Own Food.”
The artwork will tour at various places around Albany.
