AMERICUS, GA -- Veteran's day was Thursday, but Southwest Georgia continues to honor their veteran's.

A room full of veterans listened to speakers and shared a meal on a day dedicated to them on Sunday.

The program was put on by the American Legion Post 558.

“Today is just saluting the veterans of Sumter County, of surrounding counties, the state of Georgia and whoever,” said Post Commander Willie Young.

The evening was also a chance for the community to come out and meet some of the veterans.

“A lot of people don't know what we do. We gave our sacrifice when we went off. And once we come back and become members of the American Legion, which is a great organization, we come back and we try to do something for the community, just to help the kids,” said Young.

While it is nice to have a special day set aside to thank a veteran, the men here say it's important to remember a soldier’s sacrifice 365 days of the year.

“Some of them lives are lost protecting the country; some of them are hurt with lifetime ailments and sickness. It's just important when the veterans come together and the public recognizes and say 'we thank ya'll for the job that you do,'” said Vietnam veteran Sammie Hall.

Those “thank yous” they received this week are appreciated they also want people to remember there are those still fighting, still sacrificing.

“If you see a veteran, walk up to him and thank him. Thank him for a job well done. Because they sacrifice, because they are sacrificing at this time. The guys that are in Afghanistan. These are people that are sacrificing the ultimate,” said Young.
