30-year-old local organizations holds fundraisers to provide Dougherty County elementary school students with shoes
DOUGHERTY COUNTY, GA -- Nearly 83 percent of elementary school kids in Dougherty County come from disadvantaged homes that can’t afford decent shoes.
That’s why H.E.A.R.T. (Hand Extended Across Reaching Together) is holding a "Shoes from the H.E.A.R.T." drive to raise money to buy these children new shoes. Nike is sponsoring the drive, so a new pair of shoes only costs $20.
HEART’s goal is 500 pairs of shoes: 100 pairs to go to five schools. The five schools are Turner Elementary, Morningside Elementary, Sylvester Road Elementary, Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary and Jackson Heights Elementary.
“Back in March we did 200 pairs and we had so many children who said, ‘We didn’t get a pair of shoes.’ So we thought maybe we can up the number so we did to 500 and looking for the community to continue to support us,” says H.E.A.R.T. President Anne Johnson Milledge.
H.E.A.R.T. will distribute the shoes at the beginning of December.

Belk is also sponsoring the group on Nov. 6 for a special shopping day. Community members can purchase a $5 coupon for the department store which can be redeemed Nov. 6. Proceeds will go to "Shoes from the H.E.A.R.T." Contact Hayes for more details.
H.E.A.R.T. is a local organization that has existed for 30 years. It provides programs and assistance to underprivileged and low income individuals and victims who lost their possessions due to natural disasters.
