(AP) -- ATLANTA (AP) - Authorities are investigating after a state trooper fought with a fleeing suspect and shot him before the suspect was captured in south DeKalb County.

Georgia Department of Public Safety spokesman Gordy Wright says the chase began around 7:30 p.m. Sunday in Atlanta.

Wright says the trooper was pursing the suspect, who was driving a Nissan. The suspect left the car and a foot chase began. During the chase, Wright says the two fought and the suspect was shot. Wright says the suspect returned to his car and drove away but ditched the car again at a restaurant, where he was arrested a short time later.

Wright says the trooper was injured during the struggle and both were taken to the hospital, where they were expected to survive their injuries.
