It could be dangerous if your child is under the age limit and on Facebook
Everyone wants to be on the social media bandwagon--including your child.
That may be a problem if your child is underage. Technically, you're allowed on Facebook only if you are 13 or older, but there continue to be children as young as 8 on the social networking site. Joel Diaz is a youth director at First United Methodist Church and says parents ask him his advice all the time about letting their kids on Facebook. Diaz replies, it's all about supervision.
"As long as you do it on the upfront and your child knows what the rules are, they're not gonna be upset when you enforce them. But, if you make the rules up as you go and haven't thought it through, it's kind of hard to go back once you've given them freedom," Says Diaz.
A middle school principal in Long Island, N.Y. told his students he thought Facebook promoted cyber bullying--a problem that can affect a child's habits, lifestyle and mentality. 15-year-old Phoebe Prince committed suicide after she was bullied on several internet sites. Family therapist Elaine Gurley says parents can empower their child in that situation by creating a plan.
"It may not stop the bullying, but it does give them a certain amount of power," Says Gurley.
Gurley also suggests getting them motivated in activities that can keep them from spending too much time on the internet.
