Police call four Albany gangs “the bad bunch.”

Gang investigators are working hard to target active gangs and members.

At Thursday’s Gang Task Force Meeting, Gang Unit Commander Benita Childs and Chief John Proctor told those in attendance that of 42 known gangs in Albany, 14 are active. Of those 14, police call four “the bad bunch.” Police aren’t naming those gangs, but Childs says they’ve been tracking graffiti and crime to figure out which gangs are active right now.

“If they’re breaking into cars, breaking into homes, if there’s weapons or assaults,” said Childs. “You’d be surprised, a lot of them will video their criminal activity.”

Also at the meeting, the AmeriCorps cadets debuted their original ‘Stop the Violence’ song for the local campaign of the same name. Cadet Greg Barnes says they’re working on bringing the song to the national stage to do their part to combat gangs and violence.

The Gang Unit has made 84 arrests so far this year.
