Budget cuts could hit Phoebe hard, &college students less
One of Governor Sonny Perdue’s budget cut proposals is to remove the sales tax exemption for nonprofit hospitals.
Thomas Chambliss, legal counsel for Phoebe says it would be a financial blow to the hospital. “We’re in the process of trying to assess what the overall impact would be, but we know that just for supplies alone it would impact this hospital $5.6 million dollars a year” says Chambliss.
If passed the cut would also affect the numerous programs and services they provide throughout South Georgia. Chambliss says two things nonprofit hospitals in Georgia would have to consider is raising prices, or cutting the services provided. Phoebe officials say if passed, they will still try to maintain the same level of service and care they provide currently.
Governor Perdue reduced the budget cuts for public colleges and universities.
Initial numbers hovered around $300 million dollars, but he says $130 million is a more realistic number.
