The Women’s Health Initiative at the University of Pittsburgh cites a connection between heart health and breast feeding

Nearly 140,000 women between the ages of 50 and 79 +participated in a study looking at the potential long term benefits of breast feeding.

IBCLC Lactation Consultant Suzette Todd says the American Heart Association has teamed up with the United States Lactation Consultant Association to spread the work that women who breast feed are doing their own body good, as well as their baby.  “Mothers that breast feed for a total of 12 months throughout their lifetime have a lower chance of cardiovascular disease in their post menopausal years” says Todd.

The report says there are other long term benefits to mothers who breast feed for at least 12 months.
