Starting Wednesday, vehicle owners who come forward to pay the original citation fee won't have to pay any late fees

(AP) -- The city of Savannah is offering parking violators a monthlong amnesty on accumulated late fees on parking tickets.

Starting Wednesday, vehicle owners who come forward to pay the original citation fee won't have to pay any late fees.  The city charges $12 if a citation isn't paid in seven days and another $17 fee is added if it isn't paid after 30 days.

Parking amnesty was last offered about a decade ago and it brought in about $500,000 in unpaid citations.

The Savannah Morning News reports city officials estimate 18,000 people have unpaid tickets and plan to send letters to the violators to inform them of the amnesty.
