(AP) -- Police say a 5-year-old girl is in critical condition after she was hit by a car as she stepped off a school bus in Cobb County. 

Cobb County schools spokesman Jay Dillon says the Mountain View Elementary student got off the bus at a curb Wednesday afternoon. A car behind the bus tried to pass on the right side, hitting the girl as her mother and two younger siblings watched. 

Police say charges are expected against the driver, whose name was not released. The child's name also was not released.
