Lee County broke ground on a new animal shelter Tuesday morning, but the project's future is uncertain.

Public Works Director William Clark says phase one of the project will be done in three to four months, but they need funding for phase two. Phase one includes the outer shell of the building and kennels, but nothing else. The project is currently funded by donations and Splost V money.

“We’re hoping to get some additional donations whether they be monetary donations, service donations or material donations,” Clark said.

Clark estimates they need an additional $75,000 to $100,000 to complete the entire shelter.
