Local Law Enforcement helps raise money for burn family
A week ago a flash fire in an Albany house left a pair of children severely burned. The two were air lifted to the Augusta Burn Center where they’ve been monitored nearly 24 hours a day.
One year old Ja’el Fenn and three year old Jeremiah Fenn Jr. still remain in critical condition. The two’s aunt, Estella Fenn arrived in Albany yesterday after being with her brother Jeremiah Sr., the kid’s father all week.
Ja’el suffered third degree burns. Her brother wasn’t as fortunate.
“His burns are more like fourth degree burns which is like down past the tissue to the bones. The surgery that they want to do for Jeremiah Jr. is to, gosh, is to amputate both of his legs,” said Fenn.
That first surgery took place Friday when doctors removed Jeremiah’s left foot. Meanwhile, Ja’el’s wounds aren’t as severe because her older brother played that exact role.
“His hair, everything was on fire, he was on fire, he was covering Ja’el, and so that pretty much protected her by him covering her,” said Fenn.
While Jeremiah and Ja’el were physically harmed, the mother, Jessica, who suffered hand injuries while saving her children, mentally wounded.
“They had to keep her sedated when she was admitted into the hospital. She kept having nightmares and reliving the whole thing. She was physically jumping up trying to jump out of the bed at the hospital room, running to get them and they had to kind of keep pulling her back and telling her you did save them, but she was in such a trance, she didn’t even really know,” said Fenn.
Jeremiah Fenn, the father of the two children, used to serve as a Dougherty County police officer and now serves as a police officer with the Marines. The Lee County Auto Service Center will host a charity car wash Saturday morning at 8:00 where his fellow colleagues will help raise money for the family.
Leesburg Police Department’s Sgt. James Vick says he’s delighted to help out.
“It kind of hits home when it’s one of our own. So we’re definitely coming together, different agencies and show our support for him and his family by raising up to try to help with any bills that they may endure,” said Sgt. James.
