ALBANY, GA --
While you might be throwing your tree out soon, officials say you may want to hold on to your gift boxes a little longer so thieves don’t target your house.

Putting your boxes outside may let a potential criminal know exactly what's inside your house, but there are a couple of options to make sure this doesn't happen to you.

"You can either wait until it's time for trash pick-up or we have three recycling locations here in Albany where you can take those cardboard boxes and have them dropped off so thieves won't spoil your Christmas,” said Albany Police Department Public Information Officer, Phyllis Banks.

Officials say if you're going to put the boxes out on trash day, time it so they're only outside for a short amount of time so no one can see what you got.
